“It’s only five bucks. It’s not worth the paperwork.” That is exactly what they want you to think.

Every time you scroll past a settlement notice because you “don’t have time,” a Corporate Executive gets his wings (and a bonus).

Apathy is their best defense. If they rip off 10 million people for $5 each, that’s **$50 million** in theft. If only 5% of people file a claim, they get to keep the vast majority of that stolen cash.

Filing a claim isn’t about the money. It’s about being a thorn in their side.

Step 1: Verify It’s Real

Scams exist. Don’t just click links in random emails — verify it’s real first:

  • Check the URL: Legit settlements usually have dedicated domains (e.g., WalmartSettlement.com) or are hosted on administrator sites like Kroll or Epiq.
  • Cross-Reference: Check sites like Consumer Action or reputable news sources to confirm the suit is real.

Step 2: Know Your “Class”

You have to fit the description:

  • “Did you buy [Product X] between [Year A] and [Year B] in [State C]?”
  • Be honest. If you lie on these forms, it is technically perjury. (We hate these companies, but we don’t want you going to jail over them).

Step 3: The “No Proof” Option

Most consumer settlements have two tiers:

  1. With Proof: Unlimited/Higher payout (Requires receipts).
  2. Without Proof: Capped payout (usually $10-$50).

Pro Tip: Always file for the “Without Proof” tier if you don’t have receipts. It takes 30 seconds. Name, Address, Email, Venmo handle. Done.

Step 4: The Waiting Game

The wheels of justice turn slowly. It usually takes 12-18 months after the deadline for checks to go out. You will forget you filed.

Then, one random Tuesday, you’ll get a notification: You received $18.40 from [Settlement Fund]. It buys you lunch. But more importantly, it proves that you were paying attention.
